The impact of particulate contamination

Onboard filters are not developed to handle these high levels of contamination.  Without bulk filtration, these levels of contamination result in frequent change-outs and premature plugging of onboard filters. To reach clean dry diesel fuel, cleanliness control should be done site-wide. The presence of hard particulate contamination in diesel can result in three different types of fuel injector system failures:
 
  • Mechanical failures from component wear and blocking component movement
  • Electrical failures (typically as injector solenoid burnout) from silting around the poppet valve stem, restricting movement
  • Performance failures from blocking of injector nozzle and altering injector spray patterns
